SALT LAKE CITY — Football rankings, whether they’re based on human observations or complex computer programs, will always be debated and criticized.

With that in mind, the UHSAA’s debut 2020 high school football RPI rankings that were revealed Monday sure turned some heads when the top spot in 6A didn’t go to Corner Canyon.

In fact, even though Corner Canyon is widely regarded as the top team in Utah and one of the top 20 teams in the nation, the Chargers only checked in at No. 4 in the initial 6A RPI rankings.

With eight undefeated teams still remaining in 6A, Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Skyridge checking in ahead of Corner Canyon had nothing to do with performance on the field, and everything to do with opponents’ winning percentage.

RPI rankings don’t factor in margin of victory, a 1-point win counts the same as a 50-point win, which helps explain how a Pleasant Grove team that need overtime to beat Lehi in Week 5 can be ranked ahead of a Corner Canyon team that beat Alta by 50 points on the same night.

The RPI rankings, which will ultimately seed the state playoffs after week 10, are based 45% on winning percentage, 45% on opponents’ winning percentage and 10% on opponents’ opponents winning percentage.

The formula was adjusted from last season’s inaugural RPI usage, which used a 40-40-20 calculation.

This year’s five top seeds after Monday’s initial reveal are Pleasant Grove (6A), Salem Hills (5A), Sky View (4A), Summit Academy (3A) and Duchesne (2A).

Aside for Pleasant Grove — which is ranked fifth in this year’s Deseret News 6A rankings — the only other mild surprise of the five is Duchesne ahead of Beaver in 2A.

This is the second year the UHSAA is using the RPI format to seed state tournaments.

Last season, of the five teams who secured the No. 1 seed in the initial RPI reveal after week 5, three held onto the top spot heading into the playoffs — Corner Canyon (6A), Salem Hills (5A) and Park City (4A).

In 3A, Manti had the top initial RPI seed but North Sanpete was the top team heading into the playoffs. In 2A, Millard was the top seed at the midway point of the season but eventual state champion Beaver was the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

Of the five eventual state champions last season, Corner Canyon was a No. 1 seed, Orem a No. 12 seed, Sky View a No. 2 seed, Morgan a No. 5 seed and Beaver a No. 1 seed.

In most classifications the seedings ended up being pretty accurate, but 5A was certainly the most glaring which contributed to the calculation adjustment in 2020.

Even though Monday’s announcement is fun for high school football fans to analyze and dissect, in reality coaches know they don’t matter after week 5. They matter a bit more after week 10 for homefield advantage purposes, but with half the season remaining the final rankings will certainly look different than these initial rankings.

That figures to especially be true in 6A. Five of the top six teams all hail from Region 4, which kicks off league play this week. At the moment all five of those teams are undefeated, but at most only one can still be undefeated when the regular season concludes.

Several games in particular will shake up the RPI rankings this week. In 6A, No. 4 Corner Canyon hosts No. 1 Pleasant Grove this week, while in 4A No. 1 Sky View travels to No. 2 Ridgeline.
