The stakes

For Utah State … The Aggies are trying to win their first NCAA Tournament game in 20 years — USU last won in the NCAA Tournament when a 12-seed Utah State squad beat No. 5 seed Ohio State 77-68 in overtime in the first round in 2001.

For Texas Tech … The Red Raiders reached the national championship game in 2019 and the Elite Eight in 2018, and will be attempting to advance far into the tournament this time around. Texas Tech lost to defending champion Virginia 85-77 in the 2019 national title game.

The trends

For Utah State … The Aggies are an at-large bid for just the third time, joining the 2006 and 2010 teams. Utah State lost to Washington in the first round in 2006, and to Texas A&M in 2010.

For Texas Tech … This is the Red Raiders’ third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament — the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the pandemic — and the program’s fourth time reaching the NCAAs since 2016.

Next up

The winner will face the winner of No. 3 Arkansas and No. 14 Colgate in the NCAA Tournament’s second round on Sunday.
