The 2021 high school boys lacrosse season gets underway this week for teams across the state. After last year’s canceled season — in what was supposed to be lacrosse’s first as a sanctioned UHSAA sport — the anticipation for the 2021 season is sky high.

To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 4A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.

The region rankings are based on coaches’ preseason projections.

Here are the 4A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.

Coach comment

“As one of the few teams that did not get to play a game last year, I know our team is excited to get out on the field and match up against another colored jersey. The team is demonstrating just how grateful they are to be playing lacrosse again, and they are proving this every day by working hard and pushing each other to become better as individuals and as a team. We are a young team, but we have strong senior leadership not just from our captains but from the senior class as a whole, and the boys are fired up to get going. We won’t be the biggest or fastest team, but I have no doubt we will surprise some people, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this group is capable of.”

Coach comment

“The Utah Military Academy has a young and talented freshman class that is really helping our new to lacrosse older players really pick up their game. The school’s defense is anchored by the talented young goalie Hunter Keller. We have strong mid field lineup with Zanye Morton taking our faceoffs for the third year in a row. We also have two athletic senior defenders, Nathaniel Lee and Griffin Bird, to be a force in front of the crease. This will be an exciting year for the Thunderbird program and we are looking forward to our first complete sanctioned season.

1. Green Canyon Wolves

  • Luke Lee, Defender, Sr.
  • Jacob Regen, Defender, Sr.
  • laker Sampson, Midfielder/Faceoff/Get off, Jr.

Coach comment

“Green Canyon will be featuring multiyear starters in all positions, and we had the largest tryout ever in our area with nearly players competing for positions on one of three teams. We believe in 2021 our team will have solid depth in every position, and like most programs in the state our players are ready to get back on the field. At the end of last season, we were able to put together a modified lacrosse tournament at the end of the school year and invited teams from six different schools to give their players a chance to recapture some of the lost opportunity created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The event not only allowed our seniors several final games to close out their high school experience, we were able to see a handful of standout players move up and prepare to take key roles moving into 2021.

With depth in key positions, a strong desire to win back a lost 2020 season, and a dedicated coaching staff with many years of lacrosse experience, we are hoping to transition our game to be even more competitive and build one of our strongest seasons ever.

Coach comment

“Logan is going to be the team that no one knows what hit ’em this year. We have a lot of new players/transfers that come from hockey and football. Needless to say, we’re going to hit hard on defense and be hard-nosed on offense. Our senior class is stacked out with skill and great energy; these boys mesh well, love each other and have worked hard in the offseason.”
