On Tuesday, Deseret News sports writer Jay Drew was named Utah Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.
Drew was one of 115 who won 2021 state sportscaster or sportswriter honors.
BYU Radio Network’s Greg Wrubell was named Utah Sportscaster of the Year. Wrubell was one of 70 first-time winners.
Drew, who primarily covers BYU Cougars football and Utah Runnin’ Utes men’s basketball, was honored for the third time in his career.
Wrubell is the Voice of the Cougars, doing play-by-play for football, men’s basketball, soccer and baseball.
Nationally, and for the first time in association history, there was a tie for the national Sportscaster of the Year. The 2021 winners are Turner Sports’ Ernie Johnson and ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt.
ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan was voted the 2021 national Sportswriter of the Year.
The NSMA will honor its winners and Hall of Fame inductees during the organization’s 62nd awards weekend and national convention, scheduled for June 25-27 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The late Stuart Scott is one of four voted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame in the class of 2022, along with sportscaster Hubie Brown, and sportswriters Curry Kirkpatrick and Jackie MacMullan.
