Same ol’, same ol’, just the way Judge Memorial likes it.

Judge Memorial swept the 3A boys and girls swimming state titles on Saturday at BYU, with each winning for the fourth consecutive year— and fifth for the boys.

And truthfully, the chase for the championships wasn’t even close. Judge’s boys won with a score of 366, well ahead of the 267.5 points from runner-up Canyon View. On the girls side, Judge tallied 382 points to finish ahead of Canyon View’s 275 points.

First-year Judge coach Griffin Hale said it was a total team effort for both the boys and girls as they combined to have 27 swimmers compete at the state meet.

“That’s more than half the team we have. That was something that was unexpected and really exciting, getting kiddos who maybe weren’t top point scorers or top of the team coming to state. I thought that was really fun and something we’re celebrating,” said Hale.

Judge’s boys set the tone for the dominant meet in the first event of the morning, setting a 3A record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.44, edging Canyon View’s time of 1:37.84.

Both teams swam faster than the previous 3A record.

“It energized the team so much. I really do believe that the medley, the 400 free relay are some of the most exciting and important races,” said Hale. “Watching Levi Galaviz just come in and out touch the other kid was just awesome.”

Jack Talboys, Teddy Fiscus and Matt Eagar swam the first three legs to set up the senior Galaviz, who trailed when he jumped into the pool for the final leg.

Eagar swam the third leg, and later in the meet provided the lone individual win for Judge’s boys in the 100 backstroke. The senior won with a time of 52.70.

While Eagar wrapped up his career with an individual title, his freshman sister Catherine Eagar got her career started with a bang. She won the 200 individual medley, the 100 backstroke — just like her brother — and contributed in two relay wins.

The Bulldogs won all three relays.

“I’ve been sick these past few days, so I’ve missed some practice, so to come here and win I’m so proud of myself and really happy,” said Eagar.

Added Hale: “I’ve had the luxury of working with her at club swim for a little while as well, and I think coming in as a freshman girl, it’s always a big role to fill. It’s exciting to see someone that young kind of come in and fill that.”

Two other Judge Memorial girls swimmers stood on the top podium on Saturday. Senior Amelia Conner won the 100 breaststroke, winning with a time of 1:10.99, with sophomore Sophie Canale winning the 500 freestyle, touching the wall at 5:50.53.

Canyon View’s Kurt Morgan enjoyed the top individual performance of the meet for the boys in what was a record-breaking weekend. A day after breaking the all-time state record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.45, he posted the exact same time in Saturday’s event finals.

Considering he was barfing Monday with the flu and then only slept one hour on Thursday night, the fact he swam the fastest 50 free in state history — twice — is pretty remarkable.

“It feels really good to be able to touch that wall and look up and see that the time you get is lower than the record that’s up there. It feels really good,” said Morgan, who will swim at BYU after he serves a church mission.

“It kind of validates all the work I’ve put in and all the time I’ve spent.”

His next goal will be the BYU pool record, which is 19.19. He figures that once he and Olympus swimming sensation Abe Astle start competing together at BYU in 2027, “it’s gonna be legendary.”

Morgan followed up his 50 free win with a another win in the 100 freestyle, setting a 3A record in the process with a time of 45.06. He then anchored Canyon View’s winning 400 free relay team in the final race of the meet, which also set a new 3A record, posting a time of 3:12.41.

Morgan was named the 3A Swimmer of the Meet.

Morgan wasn’t the only swimmer to break a 3A boys record. St. Joseph’s Gabe Jones set a new 3A record in the 100 butterfly, winning in 48.20, his third straight state title in the event. Jones also won the state title in the 100 breaststroke later in the meet.

There was a 3-peat on the girls side as well.

South Summit’s Allison Henneuse won the 50 free for the third straight year, recording a time of 25.06. She actually had to swim the race twice, as there was a timing malfunction during the first race.

Henneuse said it was a bit difficult to re-focus so quickly for another race, but in the end she said the times felt about the same.

“I’m really excited about it. It’s something I’ve been trying to do, and 4-peat. I’d like that next year,” said Henneuse.

She turned around later and won the 100 free with a time of 53.86 and was named the 3A Swimmer of the Meet.

Other individual winners for the 3A girls were Richfield’s Avah Kling (200 free) and Parowan’s Sydni Lauer (100 butterfly). Other individual champs on the boys side were Canyon View’s Sean Cannon (200 free), Ogden’s Nathan Belnap (200 IM) and Parowan’s Ty Lauer (500 free).

The 3A state meet was a combination of 3A and 2A swimmers together in the same races, but the UHSAA awarded separate state championship trophies to 3A and 2A teams.

Rowland Hall’s girls team won the 2A team title with a score of 97 points, with North Summit in second with 78 points. Gunnison Valley won the boys title with 83 points, with St. Joseph in second with 72 points.

In winning the 100 butterfly, Lauer was named the 2A girls Swimmer of the Meet. St. Joseph’s Jones was named the 2A boys Swimmer of the Meet for his two wins.

Next year the UHSAA will host a separate 2A state meet in a one-day meet using timed finals.
