The Centers for Disease Control has a new recommendation for Americans to wear face masks as the SARS-COV-2 pandemic continues to spread across the nation.

  • One professor has made an easy how-to video on how to create your own.
  • Jeremy Howard — a researcher at the University of San Francisco — released a new video where he shows how to make a mask using household items. No sewing machine required, The Guardian reports.

How to make your mask

Howard, the co-founder of Masks 4 All, advises interested parties do the following:

  • Grab a T-shirt you don’t mind destroying. Outline the pattern of the mask. The bottom line should be where your armpits are.
  • Cut the lines through both sides.
  • Put a safety pin at the bottom. Put a paper towel between two layers of the mask.
  • Secure the mask around the front of your face.
  • Tie top straps around the back of your head and the bottom around the top of your head.

What public health experts say about masks

  • According to the Deseret News, public health experts were quiet about wearing masks amid the coronavirus pandemic until about late March. Now, they’ve changed their tune.
  • But some health experts still advise against people owning medical masks since those should be reserved for health service workers and patients.
