Rhode Island promoted a rather unique nickname on Tuesday during the second night of the Democratic National Convention, announcing itself as “the calamari comeback state of Rhode Island.”
- The announcement came as a speaker stood with a cook, who held a plate of calamari.
So what’s the deal? According to the Providence Journal, state Democratic Party Chairman Joseph McNamara filmed the scene on Oakland Beach in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was filmed behind Iggy’s Boardwalk. The executive chef, John Bordieri held a plate of calamari in the video.
- McNamara said: “It is a story of adapting ... (and) using innovation during the pandemic to help businesses and industries.”
It was an odd moment at the convention that had Twitter talking heavily.

So, yeah, basically no one knows what it means. Rhode Island appears to be promoting Calamari and that’s about it. Maybe they’re promoting a business or restaurant comeback? Who knows?
