After dropping hints about a new menu item last month, Taco Bell has finally unveiled its contender for the fast-food chicken sandwich wars: The Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco.

CNN describes the new menu item as an “all-white piece of chicken ... marinated in jalapeño buttermilk and fried with a crunchy tortilla chip coating, served in a puffy bread that’s shaped as a taco (and) topped in a creamy chipotle sauce.”

Jonathan Maze, the editor-in-chief for Restaurant Business magazine, posted an image of the new menu item on Twitter:

So, is it a sandwich or a taco?

According to a Taco Bell press release (via Fox News), it’s both a taco and and a sandwich, and “it doesn’t have to explain itself to be this delicious.”

According to Food & Wine, the new menu item will be sold in both regular and spicy versions, with the spicy variant adding on “crunchy jalapeño slices for those who can take the heat.”

When will it be released?

Taco Bell will be serving the new menu items exclusively at participating restaurants in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, starting on March 11, according to CNN. The fast-food chain has a nationwide rollout planned for later this year, though no specific date has been confirmed. According to the site, Crispy Chicken Sandwich Tacos will sell for $2.49 a pop.

The state of the ‘chicken sandwich wars’

The news of Taco Bell’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich Tacos comes days after Wendy’s announced it’s new spicy chicken sandwich, as previously reported by the Deseret News.

On Feb. 24, McDonald’s is rolling out three new and improved chicken sandwiches, and Today reports that Burger King recently announced that it will launch a new chicken sandwich later this year.

And there’s still more to come. According to Food & Wine, Taco Bell revealed in a press release that the Crispy Chicken Taco Sandwich “isn’t (the chain’s) only crispy chicken innovation arriving in 2021.”
