A public transit employee fired shots at co-workers at a rail yard in San Jose, California, killing eight people, according to NBC News. Multiple injuries were reported at the scene.

  • “There are multiple injuries and multiple fatalities in this case,” said sheriff’s deputy Russell Davis, according to NBC News. “The suspect is confirmed deceased.”

The shooter was identified as Samuel Cassidy, who was an employee at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).

  • Cassidy reportedly shot and killed himself at the scene.

Police officials said there might be explosive devices in the building at the rail yard according to The New York Times. Bomb squad officials were looking to see if the area was safe.

  • “It appears that the suspect’s house is on fire but that there was nobody inside,” said Sam Liccardo, mayor of San Jose, according to The New York Times. “There’s a strange connection here between arson and the shooting.”

The White House said it is still monitoring the situation, according to CNN.

  • “The White House is monitoring the situation and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. I know local officials have addressed this publicly, and there is an ongoing investigation as we all know. We will continue to stay in close contact with them and offer any assistance as needed,” said White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, according to CNN.
