Following Jimmy Carter’s death on Sunday, memorial services to honor the former president will start this weekend and will span over several days.
Jimmy Carter’s official state funeral is set to take place in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, per CNN.
President Joe Biden will be speaking at the funeral along with Carter’s grandson Jason Carter, who is the chairman of the board of the Carter Center.
“Eulogies will also be read from two people who were close to Mr. Carter but who have already died,” according to The New York Times.
The Eulogies from Gerald R. Ford and Walter F. Mondale will be read by their sons Steven Ford and Ted Mondale.
Before the funeral, a motorcade will take Carter’s body to Atlanta, where he will lie in repose at the Carter Center on Saturday and Sunday, per The New York Times.
Carter’s body will be flown to D.C. on Jan. 6 and he will lie in state at the Capitol, as multiple presidents dating back to Abraham Lincoln have done.
“Thousands of people are expected to file through the Rotunda to pay their respects, including lawmakers, diplomats and everyday Americans,” according to The New York Times.
After the service, Carter will be flown back to Georgia to be buried next to his wife Rosalynn in their hometown of Plains.
Biden issued a proclamation Sunday night, declaring Jan. 9 a national day of mourning, according to The Washington Post.
The president also ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff on all federal buildings, military posts, naval stations and all naval vessels for 30 days. This means the flags will still be lowered when President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20, per The New York Times.
“The Joint Task Force-National Capital Region in the Department of Defense will ultimately conduct the ceremonies,” per CNN.
Carter’s memorial service will be the first presidential funeral since George H.W. Bush died in 2018.
