WEST JORDAN — Police say a Murray man bit off part of his roommate’s ear during a fight while watching a movie.

Robert Emmett Popp, 30, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with mayhem, a second-degree felony; assault and criminal mischief, both class B misdemeanors.

On Nov. 8, a man reported that he was watching a movie with two roommates when Popp threw a glass of soda at him, causing the glass to break, according to charging documents.

The roommate confronted Popp about it, and the two ended up fighting, the charges state. During the struggle, Popp bit one roommate’s ear and punched the other roommate, according to charging documents.

When police were called, they found one man had a “piece of... ear that had been bitten off, with clear bite marks remaining (on the) attached part of the ear,” as well as scratch marks on his stomach, and the other with a bite mark on his left arm, the charges state.
