TAYLORSVILLE — A woman was arrested over the weekend after police say she set her apartment on fire.
Katia Correa Porto, 55, of Taylorsville, was arrested Sunday for investigation of aggravated arson and criminal mischief.
Unified fire crews were called to an apartment complex at 4231 S. Atherton Drive, about 6:30 a.m.
“On their arrival, they found multiple fires within a two bedroom apartment. On my investigation, I found six points of fire origin within the apartment that caused a moderate amount of smoke and fire damages to the apartment,” the arresting officer wrote in a police affidavit.
When police arrived, Porto was found sitting in her car in a nearby parking stall. When interviewed by detectives, she “would not give a reason for the fire and stated she did not notify others of the fire,” according to the report.
Police also discovered that the smoke detector in the apartment was removed prior to the fire starting, the report states.
“This smoke detector is hard-wired into the rest of the apartments in this building. The smoke detector was found several feet from the mounting area on the ceiling and appears was purposefully removed from the ceiling,” police wrote.
