SALT LAKE CITY — A group of Republican senators, including Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, introduced a resolution Friday backing government protesters in Iran.
“The Iranian regime violates human rights, opposes the rule of law and oppresses its people,” Romney said. “We stand with the Iranian people who are risking their lives to demonstrate for freedom.”
The resolution comes days after thousands of Iranian demonstrators took to the streets in opposition to Iranian government policies and the downing of a Ukrainian passenger jet. It demands that Iranian leaders be held accountable for their “murderous” actions against their own citizens who want a fair and just government.
In addition to Romney, Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, Martha McSally, R-Ariz., James Lankford, R-Okla., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, are sponsoring the measure.
