SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Monday with trying to have sex with a man’s young daughter.

Lowell David Smith, 43, is charged in 2nd District Court with attempted rape of a child, a first-degree felony, and two counts of drug possession, a third-degree felony.

From May 5 through Wednesday, Smith sent messages online to an undercover agent with the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking task force who was posing as the father of a 9-year-old girl, according to charging documents. Smith is accused of arranging with the undercover officer to have sex with his fictitious daughter and sent him explicit videos.

When Smith arrived at the designated meeting location he was arrested. In his car, investigators also found methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana, the charges state.
