SALT LAKE CITY — For the fifth day in a row, Utah health officials on Sunday reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases as well as three additional deaths.
The 1,097 cases were confirmed out of 7,487 tests — a 14.7% positive rate, according to the Utah Department of Health. The rolling seven-day average for new cases is 1,206 per day, and the average positive test rate is 14.2%.
Current hospitalizations fell slightly on Sunday to 291, down from the state’s Saturday record of 298. Utah’s intensive care units are 71.9% overall, and nonintensive units are 52% full.
Just over three weeks after officials implemented a mask mandate, Utah County’s cases continue to decrease. On Sunday, the county accounted for just under 25% of the state’s cases. But almost every other county or health district in the state is still seeing an uptick in new cases, according to state health department data.
Every county, meanwhile, also continues to confirm rates of the disease considered “very high” by health officials, except for Daggett, Uintah, Duchesne and San Juan counties, as well as northern Washington County and Cedar City.
The deaths reported Sunday bring the state’s toll to 543 Utahns. Those who died were a Salt Lake County man between the ages of 65 and 84 who was a long-term care resident; a Salt Lake County woman between 65-84 who was hospitalized when she died; and a Davis County woman between 45-64 who was also hospitalized.
Now 94,394 positive cases have been confirmed in Utah out of 973,938 people who have been tested since the pandemic began, with an overall positive rate of 9.7%. Nearly 70,200 of the state’s cases are considered recovered after passing the three-week point since their diagnoses.
Hospitalizations since the outbreak hit Utah total 4,656.
