Matthew Burchett died in August 2018 from injuries sustained while fighting a fire north of San Francisco. The ceremony also honored fallen Draper Fire Marshal Bryan Thatcher, who died from a heart attack in June 2018. The event was part of the nationwide tribute by the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation and as part of the Light the Night campaign to honor firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
