Republican Fourth Congressional District candidate Burgess Owens appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” to discuss the race against Democratic incumbent Ben McAdams. During part of that appearance, he said, “I have a little news flash, and this kind of gives you an idea of where our country is at this point. … We got an email from Deseret News, a major news outlet here, that they are actually ceasing our advertisement, five days before the election. And they decided to pull our ads, and I have no idea why.”
This statement by candidate Owens is incorrect.
The Deseret News has not ceased taking advertising from the Owens campaign or any other political candidate. Throughout the campaign season, the Deseret News has repeatedly run advertising for both Owens and McAdams. Advertisements posted this week on Deseret.com on behalf of Owens fell short of our advertising standards.
The Deseret News has run Owens advertisements receiving more than 350,000 ad impressions since Oct. 23. The Deseret News on Wednesday reached out to Owens’ campaign representatives. A meeting was set even before Owens’ appearance on Fox News to discuss how to bring the ads into compliance, a process we employ with advertisers.
