NEPHI — One person died Monday night after sustaining severe head injuries in a car accident on state Route 132 roughly 16 miles east of Nephi, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
At about 5:30 p.m., the driver, whose identity has not been released, was driving a van westbound when they “ran off the right side of the road,” troopers say.
“The driver corrected and came back onto the road and over-corrected, traveling back off the right side of the road.”
That’s when police say the van traveled up a large embankment, rotated counterclockwise, and began to roll. After rolling back down the embankment, the van came to rest in the middle of the highway.
The driver was wearing a seatbelt, but sustained severe head injuries during the crash and was pronounced dead Monday. Troopers believe a medical condition may have contributed to the crash, although the incident is still under investigation.
Another person who police say was in the passenger seat during the crash was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Police say they were also wearing a seatbelt.
