SALT LAKE CITY — A man wanted for attempted murder in Montana and for questioning in connection with two other homicides was arrested by troopers in Iron County during a traffic stop, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

On Tuesday, a trooper pulled over a vehicle for reckless driving just after 4 p.m. on I-15 near Enoch, north of Cedar City. Multiple drivers had called 911 reporting the vehicle was “tailgating, speeding, cutting in and out of traffic and driving aggressively,” according to the UHP.

When the trooper spotted Troy Allen Mullin, 37, he was traveling 98 mph, the UHP stated.

“This vehicle started to pull over as if he was going to stop. The vehicle then quickly got back on I-15 as if he was going to run. Shortly thereafter, he pulled over and came to a stop,” according to statement from UHP.

After the trooper received Mullin’s ID card, he ran a background check and discovered he was wanted in Helena, Montana for attempted homicide for allegedly trying to strangle a woman, said UHP Lt. Nick Street. He was also wanted for questioning in connection with two other homicides in that state, he said.

As the trooper was chasing after Mullin, his supervisor happened to see him go by, Street said. The supervisor followed and helped the trooper arrest Mullin without incident.

Troopers also reported finding empty beer cans, drugs and drug paraphernalia in Mullin’s vehicle.

According to a social media post by the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Office in Montana, Mullin is also a “sexually violent predator” who is on the state’s sex offender registry and has been convicted previously of burglary, sexual intercourse without consent, and criminal endangerment. The sheriff’s office said he had absconded from parole at the time of his most recent crime.
