WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have arrested a man accused of sexually abusing a girl whom his wife was babysitting nine years ago.

Sandro Liborio Avila, 44, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Thursday for investigation of seven counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and five counts of sodomy on a child.

A girl recently told police that when she was about 4 years old in 2011 and at the babysitter’s house, she was abused by Avila on multiple occasions, according to a police affidavit.

“There is substantial evidence to support the charge, and through clear and convincing evidence that Sandro Liborio Avila would constitute a substantial danger to another individual or to the community, or is likely to flee the jurisdiction of the court, if released on bail,” police wrote in the affidavit.

Police said they fear Avila may flee to Mexico if he is released, noting that he was previously charged in Georgia with violating immigration laws.
