Harris and other officers were at the school to donate books collected during the police department’s annual book drive. “Education and reading is paramount in developing a successful law-abiding citizen,” Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said in a statement. “There’s a link between low literacy and crime. Seventy-five percent of adults incarcerated in state prisons lack a high school diploma or have low literacy skills. ,,,It is imperative that young children develop a love and passion for reading. Books are a ticket for success.” The officers also donated books collected in the drive to North Star Elementary. This is the fourth year the department has conducted a book drive for schools in Salt Lake City in partnership with Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.
