PAYSON — A Payson man was arrested Sunday and accused of stabbing a relative in the chest with a screwdriver after breaking into his home, police said.

Officers were called to the home about 2 a.m. on the report of a 46-year-old man who had been injured. The man and his wife told police a man had “forced his way into their residence and pointed a gun at them demanding money and other items of value,” Payson police said in a news release.

The couple reported the man damaged property in their home and stole items. The man allegedly took their cellphones to prevent them from calling police during the robbery.

“The suspect then took a screwdriver and stabbed the male victim in the chest and fled the scene. The screwdriver punctured the victim’s chest and X-rays revealed the screwdriver was touching the victim’s heart,” police said in the statement.

The injured homeowner was taken to Utah Valley Hospital. Information about his condition Sunday evening was not available, but police described him as stabilized.

The wife was not injured during the incident.

The couple and another family member helped police identify the man, according to the statement. The man’s relation to the couple has not been released.

Officers located Kayden Loveall, 19, in possession of property from the couple’s home, as well as the handgun described in the robbery, police said.

Loveall was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, robbery, and several other charges.
