SALT LAKE CITY — A West Jordan man died from severe head trauma after crashing his motorcycle in South Jordan on Friday, police say.

Richard Gomez, 56, was driving southbound on Bangerter Highway near 10400 South at about 4 p.m. when the crash occurred. According to South Jordan Police Sgt. Samuel Winkler, Gomez was approaching a red light when he locked up the brakes on his motorcycle, lost control and was thrown from the bike.

Gomez was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead on the scene, Winkler said.

“We implore motorcycle riders to please wear a helmet,” Winkler said. “In a case like this it actually could have saved his life.”

No other injuries were reported and the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the crash, Winkler said.

The crash prompted police to close southbound lanes on Bangerter until about 7:30 p.m. Friday.
