CEDAR CITY — A man who police say shot and killed a man and then shot himself as police approached him has died of his injuries.

Officers were dispatched to 100 West block of Sunset Drive at about 10:40 p.m Sunday on a report of shots fired, according to Cedar City police.

There, the officers found 47-year-old Jeremy Hunter dead from multiple gunshots. Police said in a news release that Chaz Bennett, 26, was located a few blocks away.

“As the officers attempted to contact him, the officers clearly could see he had two rifles. As officers were commanding Chaz to drop the guns, he fled on foot for a short distance before he shot himself,” police stated.

According to Cedar City police, officers rendered aid and Bennett was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police were informed Wednesday Bennett had died from his self-inflicted injuries. An autopsy will be performed at the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office.

A motive for the shooting was still being investigated as of Wednesday.
