Scott Smith hands out an apricot from Smith Orchards in Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City on Wednesday during a press conference about the changes that will be made for the 29th season of the Downtown Farmers Market in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The market, which will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday through Oct. 24, will include enhanced health safety measures such as a revised vendor layout, one-way traffic throughout the market, 10 feet of space between vendor booths, social distancing markers, and hand-washing and hand sanitizer stations. Arts and craft vendors, musicians, and food trucks have been eliminated for the 2020 season, and no pets will be allowed. Offerings, for now, will be limited to meats, fruits, vegetables, other agricultural products and limited packaged goods. Masks will be required for vendors and staff and are strongly encouraged for all patrons. Market director Alison Einerson noted that while the 2020 market will not be the social event it has been for 28 years, the focus will be on creating a safe environment for patrons and vendors. “We have limited the offerings to limit gathering,” said market director Alison Einerson. “Think of the market this year as a grocery store: Make a list, leave your family and pets at home, make your purchases and make room for the next patrons.”
