APPLE VALLEY, Washington County — One man is dead, one structure was damaged and five homes were threatened from a wildfire burning in Washington County Monday evening.
According to fire officials, the man was found in the structure burned by the fire, and the cause of his death is currently under investigation. Fire officials said it appeared the man “suffered a medical emergency and did not survive.”
While early estimates indicated the fire, named the Apple Fire, had burned 80 acres, updated numbers from fire officials said the blaze was around 49 acres in size and was 10% contained Monday night. Firefighters from multiple agencies are responding.
The fire, burning south of state Route 59 about two miles west of Apple Valley, started about 7:35 p.m. Wind is driving the flames, and the cause is under investigation.
