SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers are being urged plan for heavy traffic along the Wasatch Front starting Thursday as people head out for the Fourth of July weekend.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, traffic is expected to be heavy from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both northbound and southbound I-15 in Salt Lake County; from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on northbound I-15 in Davis County; and from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on southbound I-15 in Utah County.

Across the state, most road projects will suspend construction and open all lanes to traffic to help reduce delays during the weekend. However, existing lane restrictions or traffic shifts will remain in place where needed to protect the work zone and ensure safety for drivers.

Some areas where restrictions will remain in place include:

  • Box Elder County, where I-15 has been reduced to one lane in each direction near Tremonton, with all traffic shifted to the northbound lanes.
  • Weber and Davis counties, where lanes on I-15 are split in both directions between Clearfield and Roy, with the far left lane shifted onto the opposite side of the freeway. Drivers should merge into the right lanes earlier than usual if exiting the freeway in Clearfield, Sunset or Roy.
  • Salt Lake and Tooele counties, where lanes have been shifted and narrowed on I-80 between the state Route 202 interchange and the S.R. 36 interchange, and the speed limit is reduced to 65 mph.
  • Utah County, where the speed limit on I-15 in Lehi has been reduced to 60 mph from Main Street to S.R. 92. Drivers should be alert when traveling through the work zone and anticipate areas of rough or uneven pavement.
  • Wasatch County, where U.S. 40 will have one lane open in each direction through the construction zone from Daniels Summit to the Soldier Creek turnoff near Strawberry Reservoir. Speeds are reduced to 55 miles per hour, and barrels will remain in place.

After the holiday, drivers should plan for new restrictions on I-15 in Juab County. A paving project between the Yuba Lake interchange and Scipio is approximately halfway done, and will be shifting work into the northbound lanes beginning Monday, July 6. Northbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane Monday through Thursday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Friday from 7 a.m. to noon, for the next several weeks.
