ST. GEORGE — Three people were killed in an accident near St. George when an SUV swerved into oncoming traffic and hit two other cars, one of them head-on.

The accident occurred about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday when a Cadillac SUV crossed over the center line on state Route 18 just past the Ledges exit, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street.

The Cadillac “sideswiped a silver Ford Focus, causing the female driver of the Focus to lose control and impact the cement barrier on the west side of the roadway,” according to UHP. The SUV then continued driving north in the southbound lanes until it crashed head-on into a Nissan Versa.

The driver of the SUV and an elderly couple in the Nissan were all killed in the accident, he said. The driver of the Ford Focus was transported to a hospital in serious condition, Street said.

The road was closed between the Ledges exit and Winchester Hills as investigators collected evidence, including trying to determine why the Cadillac crossed over into oncoming traffic, Street said.
