OREM — A 23-year-old Orem man has been charged with trying to kill his father following an argument over chores, according to police.

Andres Juan Maldonado Jr. was charged Thursday in 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony.

Tuesday night, police believe Maldonado shot his father, 49-year-old Andres Maldonado, at their home at the Cherry Hill Apartments, near 1700 South and 400 East, according to charging documents.

The younger Maldonado had been arguing with his father over chores “and the son was to be kicked out,” the charges state.

Maldonado had left the home earlier in the day and his father had begun packing his son’s belongings to get him moved out, according to charging documents. When he returned, Maldonado and his father again argued in the entryway of their apartment, prompting the younger Maldonado to shoot his father several times in the torso, the charges state.

Six shell casings were recovered from the scene, according to the charges.

A $500,000 cash only warrant was issued Thursday for Maldonado’s arrest.
