SALT LAKE CITY — Police are trying to piece together what led to a man being shot in a west Salt Lake neighborhood Thursday afternoon.
Salt Lake police arrived at 648 N. 900 West about 1:30 p.m. to find a man shot multiple times in the abdomen.
“When officers arrived on scene, they performed life-saving care for him until ambulance and EMS got here,” said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. “Our officers, if he makes it, may have played a role in saving his life. ... He had extremely serious, life-threatening injuries. Hopefully he makes it.”
The man, whose name and age were not available, was fighting for his life as Salt Lake police searched for the shooter.
“We’re just starting to put the pieces together,” Wilking said. “We’re really unsure of what happened here.”
There was a scooter and bike near the injured man, but police aren’t sure what, if any, role those items played in the situation leading to the shooting. In fact, exactly what happened and why is almost a complete mystery, and detectives were walking the neighborhood talking with residents, as well as collecting any video that may have captured anything related to the shooting.
“Hopefully we get some good pieces to this puzzle, put them together and solve this,” Wilking said. “We don’t know if the shooter was outside a vehicle or inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting. ... We are looking for a darker color Honda Civic or Ford.”
He said the incident didn’t appear to be random, so while there is a shooting suspect on the loose, police feel the danger to the public is low.
“We can have these kinds of incidents occur anywhere in Salt Lake City,” he said. “It’s important that people in the area come forward and help us solve these kinds of crimes.”
