HEBER CITY — The body of a 71-year-old Tennessee man was recovered Wednesday night from Deer Creek Reservoir.

Daniel Nelson Thompson, of Newport, Tennessee, was boating with friends and family at Deer Creek State Park when he jumped into the water about 1:30 p.m. to retrieve a hat that had fallen in, according to a statement from Utah State Parks.

“Thompson was not wearing a life jacket and was unable to remain afloat and keep his head above water,” park officials stated.

Another member of the group jumped in the water to try and help but was unsuccessful, and the group called 911 shortly after.

A dive team located Thompson’s body about 8:30 p.m. about 300 feet from shore and about 111 feet under water, according to the statement.
