SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police continued Friday to look for a gunman in connection with the fatal shooting of a man on Wednesday.
Luis Melendez, 49, was shot about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Harrison Avenue between State and Major streets in Salt Lake City.
Police say Melendez was staying at the new homeless shelter, 3380 S. 1000 West, at the time of the incident. Next of kin had to be tracked down out of state to notify them of their loved one’s death, according to police. Detective Michael Ruff said his department had had no interaction with Melendez prior to Wednesday.
The area where the shooting occurred has had drug and prostitution problems, according to police.
Investigators continued Friday to look for the gunman. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
