WEST JORDAN — A 17-year-old boy was arrested for investigation of attempted murder after police say he shot a man he’s had an ongoing dispute with.

The incident happened about 9:50 p.m Monday at a home near 7800 South and 5200 West. West Jordan Police Lt. Rich Bell said a 17-year-old boy lives at the residence with a woman who is his guardian. The woman allows a man to live in a trailer on her driveway in exchange for fixing items around the house, Bell said.

The teen and the man have an ongoing dispute that has been “violent at times,” he said. Police have not said what the dispute was about.

On Monday, as the woman and teen were pulling into the driveway, the man immediately came after the boy while screaming, being very aggressive and doing a lot of “physical posturing,” Bell said. Investigators do not believe the man was armed.

The 17-year-old responded by grabbing the woman’s handgun that she kept in the car and shooting the man in the chest and leg, according to police.

The man was driven by another person to the hospital where Bell said he is expected to survive his injuries. Neither the name or age of the man was immediately available Tuesday,

The boy was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of attempted murder. Bell said detectives do not believe the shooting constituted self-defense.
