A man who authorities say shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of a busy grocery store Saturday is in critical condition after shooting himself at the end of a lengthy standoff with police.
The suspected gunman was taken to a hospital where he remained Saturday evening, according to Ogden Police Lt. Tyler Ziegler.
The chain of events began about 1:15 p.m. when officers responded to reports of shots fired outside of a Smith’s grocery store located at 1485 S. Harrison Blvd.
Ziegler said the man, whose name and age weren’t immediately released, confronted his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot outside of the store. The 41-year-old woman, whose name was also not released, was shot and killed.
The man fled the scene after the shooting but was quickly identified and located in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of Maple Street, according to Ziegler. The standoff there with Ogden Metro SWAT lasted several hours before the man shot himself, Ziegler said.
The standoff played out less than 4 miles south of the site of the shooting. Ogden police and the Weber-Morgan Homicide Task Force are investigating Saturday’s chain of events.
