A Salt Lake County man was killed Thursday afternoon in the crash of a light plane on the southeastern end of Bear Lake.

The pilot of the twin-engine Piper Aerostar was identified by the Rich County sheriff's office as John A. Helstrom, 67, Holladay.No one else was aboard the craft, which landed in about four feet of water, according to the Regional Operations Center of the Federal Aviation Administration, Seattle.

"We have no idea of the cause of the crash," said Don Hughes, duty officer at the Seattle center. The crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, with assistance from FAA flight standards personnel from Salt Lake City.

According to an Associated Press story, the pilot was traveling from Salt Lake City to his summer cabin in Rich County when the plane crashed at 3:31 p.m. on the southeastern end of the lake near Eden Ranch. The pilot's body was recovered from the crash site. Further details were unavailable Friday.
