Garth G. Chamberlain, a professional football player who developed a tourist attraction in southern Utah, died Dec. 21, 1988, in Chandler Ariz. He was 68.
A graduate of Jordan High School and Brigham Young University, Chamberlain was the first BYU football player ever drafted by an NFL team. He played professional ball for Pittsburgh Steelers and the Salt Lake Sea Gulls, before the local pro-team folded.Chamberlain, a former Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff, won many awards for his jewelry, woodcarving, bronze sculptures, oil paintings and Kachina dolls. He created and operated Moqui Cave, a natural cavern that was converted into a tourist attraction.
He was born May 20, 1920, in Alton, to Vera Heaton and Guy Chamberlain. He married Laura Young, Aug. 13, 1938, in East Midvale. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple.
Chamberlain is a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be held Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. in the Kanab LDS Stake Center. Friends can call at Mosdell Mortuary on Monday, 7-8 p.m., and Tuesday at the chapel beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery.
