Some coaches in the National Basketball Association are taking another look at their own contracts now that Larry Brown has left Kansas University to sign a 5-year, $3.5 million contract to coach the San Antonio Spurs.
"I'm going to toast Larry Brown. He just set a new standard for the rest of us," said Los Angeles Lakers Coach Pat Riley when he heard the news Monday at Pontiac, Mich., where his team is battling the Detroit Pistons for the NBA championship.If the Spurs were willing to pay $700,000 a year for Brown, then the Lakers may be willing to find some extra cash for a coach pushing toward a second consecutive NBA title.
Pistons coach Chuck Daly also applauded the announcement.
"God bless him (Brown) with his salary," Daly told the San Antonio Light. Daly is a free-agent himself and faces negotiation for a new contract with the Pistons once the season is over.
