Frank Zamboni, whose name forever will be associated by hockey fans with the ungainly but mesmerizing ice-resurfacing machine he invented, has died, mortuary officials said Thursday. He was 87.

Zamboni, a former ice supplier who was forced out of business in the 1930s by the invention of the refrigerator, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach, a spokesman for Paramount Mortuary said.The Zamboni ice-resurfacing machine, which he first introduced in 1947, is now familiar to rinkgoers in 33 countries, including Cuba and the Soviet Union.
