Roy Buchanan, regarded as one of the world's finest rock guitarists, hanged himself with his shirt in a holding cell shortly after being jailed for public drunkenness, authorities said Tuesday. He was 47.

Buchanan, whose rave reviews and skills were never matched by his record sales, was pronounced dead at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.He was found hanging from a window grate in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center cell by his button-down shirt, said Fairfax County Deputy Sheriff Carl Peed.
