Businessman Del Dunmire has given hundreds of thousands in donations over the years, but his $50,000 gift to Abilene, Kan., had a special meaning. In 1958, Dunmire robbed the Commercial State Bank in Abilene. He was caught, convicted and sent to prison, serving two years. After his release, Dunmire borrowed $3,000 to start Growth Industries, the aviation parts company that became the source of his wealth. The gift to Abilene will help rebuild a bandstand destroyed by fire. The robbery 31 years ago netted Dunmire $2,261.
