A Utah State University program aimed at recruiting minority students and encouraging their educational development beginning in elementary school has received a $10,000 gift from US WEST Communications.

The Realizing Educational Potential program is directed at recruiting, retaining and matriculating ethnic minority students.Clifton Wilkes, director of USU's Center for Cultural Pluralism, said eligible students may participate beginning as early as the sixth grade and continue through their high school senior year.

Each time they achieve a half-percent improvement in their grade point average, a certain amount is set aside in a reserve account.
