Ten University of Utah Medical Center physicians - and the center itself - are included in a list of "Outstanding Medical Specialists and Hospitals and Clinics in the United States."

In the list, published in the October and November issues of Town & Country Magazine, the center was among 33 hospitals and clinics characterized as "some of the most highly respected medical institutions in the United States."Other institutions listed include Baylor, Duke, Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic, Mount Sinai, Stanford and UCLA.

Town & Country compiled the list after querying more than 2,000 doctors nationwide for their personal recommendations of noteworthy colleagues in their field. The magazine asked them to recommend "the doctors that you would seek out for treatment for yourself or for a family member."

Ten U. physicians made the list.

"While surveys of this type by the popular press are not necessarily objective and I am certain there are many fine physicians and hospitals that deserve similar recognition, it is gratifying to note the excellent representation of our University of Utah Medical Center and staff," said Dr. Cecil O. Samuelson, U. vice president for health sciences.

"Our school of medicine and hospital are recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of work done here. Yet, I am compelled to point out that only 12 percent of the financial support for the medical school and less than 3 percent of that hospital comes from the state of Utah," Samuelson said.

"This is far below average for even average institutions of our type."

Samuelson extended his congratulations to the 10 physicians who were recognized. They include Dr. J. Robert Stewart, radiation oncology; Dr. William D. Odell, medicine; Dr. J. Richard Baringer, neurology; and Dr. M. Peter Heilburn, neurosurgery.

Also named are Dr. James R. Scott, reproductive immunology; Dr. William R. Keye, reproductive endocrinology; Dr. John R. Ward, rheumatology; Dr. William A. Gay Jr., heart transplantation; and Dr. Richard Middleton, urology.
