The bloom is off the Rose at Michigan with the news that tailback Tony Boles will need major reconstructive surgery on his right knee.
Boles, injured two weeks ago, will miss both the Rose Bowl and spring practice, Michigan coach Bo Schembechler said Monday.Boles, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound redshirt junior, injured the knee on his first carry against Minnesota and didn't play in last week's regular-season finale against Ohio State, which locked up the Wolverines' second successive Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth.
It's highly unlikely Boles will ever play tailback again, if he plays at all, Schembechler said.

Schembechler said Boles would likely be moved to flanker, a position where the knee wouldn't take the same kind of punishment.
