Armed paramilitary police have tightened security at China's national radio and television stations in a widening clampdown following the turmoil in Romania, sources said Thursday. But a government spokesman insisted Beijing has "confidence in socialism."
The security move was the latest reflecting the government's concern at the impact of the Romanian upheaval on still-simmering dissent since Beijing crushed the Chinese pro-democracy movement last June. The official response has included an internal policy memorandum sharply critical of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for having "subverted socialism" by encouraging the changes in Eastern Europe, sources said.
The internal document critical of Gorbachev was the first known reflection of earlier intense private attacks on the Soviet leader by senior leader Deng Xiaoping and Premier Li Peng. They are known to have assailed Gorbachev in private meetings as weak and dangerous.
