Thousands of Estonians celebrated their Independence Day Friday by hoisting their national flag over the highest castle tower in the capital of Tallinn after relegating the flag of Soviet Estonia to a museum.

The Soviet government newspaper Izvestia said "many thousands" of people attended, including the republic's Communist Party chief Vaino Vyalyas. Soviet television showed crowds in the cobble-stoned Old Town of the Baltic port.
