One U.S. Marine was killed and two were injured when their boats overturned during a pre-dawn training accident off the coast of Australia, military officials in Honolulu said Thursday.
Nine boats carrying 51 Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and one member of the Royal Australian army overturned in heavy surf, said CINCPAC Fleet spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Bob Anderson. The accident occurred about 3 a.m. local time in a training area about 350 nautical miles north of Brisbane, Anderson said.
The boats were part of a force that had been launched from the USS Duluth, homeported in San Diego, as part of exercise Valiant Usher 89-4. The other boats quickly returned to the Duluth after the accident, he said.
