Winchester, Tenn., city council members have tabled a plan to rename a street after entertainer Dinah Shore because of public opposition in her former hometown.

The city's Merchant Association had wanted to rename a street between Winchester and Decherd Dinah Shore Boulevard, in hopes that the singer's name would attract tourists to this small, south-central Tennessee town.Council members tabled the motion "under advisement from our constituents," Clerk Jimmy Crownover said. "Most said they would want to have a name for the street that had some historical value."

Miss Shore has been invited to a celebration this summer marking the town's 175th anniversary.
