A small airplane narrowly missed a busy highway and crashed into a field Wednesday, killing three men aboard, police said.

Killed were the pilot, Edward L. Vandervelden, 54, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; his son, Michael, 25, also of Grand Blanc; and James R. Laporte of Portage, Mich., state police said.The six-seat Piper Malibu aircraft lost power and part of a wing before it nosedived into the field, witnesses said. The aicraft took off from Tullahoma, Tenn., and was on its way to Kalamazoo, Mich., state police said.
