Two boys, one from California and the other from Orem, drowned in unrelated incidents Monday and early Wednesday.

Danny Lewis, 16, of San Leandro, Calif., was on an outing sponsored by VisionQuest, an Arizona-based youth group camping at the Red Fleet Reservoir eight miles north of Vernal. He became tangled in moss, authorities said.Uintah County Sheriff Drew Christiansen said members of the group made several attempts to save the youth before calling authorities. Search and rescue divers recovered the body about 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Eric Smith, 5, of Orem, died early Wednesday after falling in an Orem City canal, according to Gerald Nielsen, Orem Police.

The boy, a son of William and Gailan Smith, was playing with a friend near the canal. When Eric fell in, his playmate ran home to get his father.

The man saw Eric floating face down in the canal at the south end of the Orem Cemetery. He pulled the boy out of the water as paramedics arrived at the scene.

The boy was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center at 5:30 p.m. where he died at 12:24 a.m. Wednesday.

Eric's father is working for a Brigham Young University program in France. Eric's mother was at the scene.
