Dr. J. Calvin Giddings, recognized as one of the top analytical chemists in the world, has been appointed distinguished professor of chemistry at the University of Utah.
The appointment, effective July 1, reserved for individuals whose achievements exemplify the highest goals of scholarship, was approved by the University of Utah Institutional Council. Only 15 of the 3,336 U. professors hold the rank.Giddings, who has been a member of the faculty since 1957, is professor of chemistry and director of the University Field-Flow Fractionation Research Center. His pioneering efforts in chromatography, a method used worldwide for the analysis of complex environmental and biological materials, has won him international recognition.
In his research Giddings is currently devising theory and techniques for separating complex mixtures into their components. One such class of techniques is called field-flow fractionation, which Giddings and his U. of U. colleagues invented and developed.
